More Americans die each year from heart-related issues than any other reason, and consuming too much sodium is part of the problem.  Children and youth are affected as well – experts say they are seeing an increased number of children and youth with high blood pressure.  And some experts warn that we are facing an explosion of new cardiovascular disease cases in young adults and adults.

At Southern Delight, it’s our intention to be part of the solution, not part of the problem!  Beginning in January 2008, when we eliminate salt from our Salsa products, all products under the Southern Delight brand will be no-salt-added, low sodium.

It's time for Americans to overhaul their diets and their eating habits.  The message you are going to be hearing from us through TV cooking segments is, “If you want to improve the quality of your health, you simply must start cooking many of your meals from scratch at home, using low sodium products.  And we don't mean popping pre-prepared convenience foods in the microwave. “

Southern Delight's Sodium CalculatorCooking heart healthy meals at home doesn't have to be time consuming and difficult, but you need to pay very close attention to the nutrition facts and the serving size on the foods that you buy.  One of the simple things we’re showing people is how to reduce the sodium in their soups by as much as 80 percent, by making easy homemade soups at home.  See our recipes page for downloadable recipes and for a simple sodium calculator Excel spreadsheet

Reducing your family’s sodium intake to a healthy level requires that you become very diligent in reading nutrition facts panels and paying close attention to the reported serving sizes, plus just saying no to salt.  We recommend that Americans stop using salt in their cooking and remove the salt shaker from the kitchen table, switching to herbs, spices, citrus and other salt substitutes.

We believe that it's completely irresponsible for American food manufacturers to load up their foods with salt in order to boost flavor and reduce cost at the expense of the health of their consumers, which is exactly what's been happening for years.  Salt is the least expensive ingredient a manufacturer can add to improve flavor.

Some common sense advice to follow:
1.  Read the nutrition facts and ingredients statements on all foods you buy.
2.  Buy products labeled as low-sodium or no-salt-added.
3.  Buy fewer (if any) pre-prepared meal items, which are typically loaded with salt.
4.  Use olive or canola oils or low-fat margarine in your cooking.
5.  Switch to whole grains (whole wheat breads, brown rice, and oats).
6.  Embark on the journey of preparing heart-healthy meals at home.

Most of the sodium that Americans consume comes from our taking the easy way when it comes to the foods we eat.  “Heat and Serve” has become the American way of life, and as a result, many Americans are literally killing themselves with the foods they eat.
